Tennessee grabs first ever win over the Tigers in Columbia
COLUMBIA, Mo. -- No. 22 University of Tennessee volleyball team moved into sole possession of second place in the Southeastern Conference standings, defeating No. 23 Missouri Tigers in four sets.
The Lady Vols (22-5, 13-2 SEC) held the Tigers, who entered with the 20th best hitting percentage in the nation, to just .209 Wednesday night in Columbia, Mo. Tennessee forced Missouri (22-6, 12-4 SEC) to a -.029 hitting percentage in the fourth and final set en route to a 25-12 set victory.
Junior Tessa Grubbs led the way offensively with match-high 20 kills including 18 in the first three frames. This is the fourth match in the last five that Grubbs has posted 20-plus kills.
After dropping the opening set 25-19, senior Erica Treiber and Grubbs helped Tennessee out to an early lead in the second set. With Treiber on the service line, the Lady Vols went on a 5-0 run to go up 5-2 in the set and they would never trail from that point.
The run included two of eight kills from Grubbs in the frame as the junior finished the set hitting .500 en route to a .385 hitting percentage night. It is the third consecutive match the Tega Cay, S.C. native has hit .350-plus.
With the match tied at a set each and the third set tied at 12-12, the Lady Vols thwarted the Tigers offensive, sustaining a long rally before a hitting error by Dariana Holllingsworth gave Tennessee the point.
The point proved to be the turning point in the set as the Lady Vols held onto the lead for the remainder of the set, taking the third set 25-22.
During the rally, senior Brooke Schumacher entered the top five in UT history in career digs. Schumacher, who finished with seven digs on the night, now has 1,341 digs in her four-year career.
From Coach Adams:
On turning point after set one:
"There was definitely a mentality change. I think we always played hard but, I think we played a little smarter in sets two, three and four. We switched the lineup a little bit with Asha (Phillips) staying in the back row and put Rocky (Perinar) in the front row. I think that those changes definitely helped us." -- Coach Tyler Adams
On defense and back row play in the third:
"We have been working on our blocking and defense all week. In the third, we were pretty relentless. We made them take three, four or five swings. We didn't give them anything easy that wares a team out. Our defense starting in the second through the rest of the match was pretty good." -- Coach Tyler Adams
On beating a ranked team on the road:
"They were undefeated at home so far this year. It is a really good tribute to our team and the steps we have taken this year to come into a road environment and get a big win." – Coach Tyler Adams
From Sedona Hansen:
On the energy on the floor:
"After the first set, we knew that we could beat this team. It just took us having the energy and ability to make more plays than them. Coming out in the second set that is what we did. It continued and our energy didn't stop from there." – Sedona Hansen
On the on-court connection with Tessa Grubbs:
"On the court, I just know the kind of ball she likes. When the play isn't there, we know that it was just a fluke. We just have the same vibe on the court and it works well." – Sedona Hansen
On digging the opposition:
"We have been struggling on our defensive game. So to be able to make the other team struggle scoring wise that is a huge step forward for our team because we have been working on that for weeks during practice. The fact that we were able to show what we were working on in the game is huge." – Sedona Hansen
Standout Stat:
Tennessee plays its last road match of the season Sunday at Arkansas. The Lady Vols defeated the Razorbacks in five sets earlier this season inside of Thompson-Boling Arena. Arkansas was swept Wednesday by No. 11 Kentucky and currently sit at 5-10 in conference play.
The match will air on SEC Network+ with the first serve scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (ET) in Fayetteville, Ark.
