October 05, 2018 | Soccer
EDINBURG, Texas -- Tennessee senior Bunny Shaw has rejoined the Jamaican Women's National Team for the 2018 CONCACAF Women's Championship, hosted by the United States from Oct. 4-17. Shaw and the 'Reggae Girlz' open group play Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET against Canada at the H-E-B Park in Edinburg, Texas.
Â
The CONCACAF Women's Championship features eight confederations split into two groups of four. The top-three finishers from the tournament earn an automatic bid to the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France.
Â
Shaw's Jamaican side was grouped with Canada, Costa Rica and Cuba following a draw that took place on Sept. 4. The Group B schedule for the Reggae Girlz is listed below:
Â
• Friday, Oct. 5 - Jamaica vs. Canada - 8:30 PM - FS2 - H-E-B Park (Edinburg, Texas)
• Monday, Oct. 8 - Jamaica vs. Costa Rica - 6 PM - FS2 - H-E-B Park (Edinburg, Texas)
• Thursday, Oct. 11 - Jamaica vs. Cuba - 7:30 PM - FS2 - H-E-B Park (Edinburg, Texas)
Â
The top two squads from Group A (Mexico, Panama, Trinidad & Tobago, United States) and Group B (Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, Jamaica) will compete in the semifinals on Oct. 14 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. A third-place match is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Oct. 17, followed by the final at 7 p.m.
Â
Across eight matches, Shaw leads Jamaica and all players worldwide with 16 goals in World Cup qualifiers. Notable performances include a double hat trick in a 13-0 win over Guadoloupe, a hat trick in a 9-0 victory against Antigua & Barbuda, as well as a couple of braces in wins over Trinidad & Tobago (4-1) and Cuba (6-1).
Shaw aims to become the fifth player in UT history to compete at the FIFA Women's World Cup. Former Lady Vols Kendyl Michner (Mexico), Rhian Wilkinson (Canada), Marie-Eve Nault (Canada) and Hannah Wilkinson (New Zealand) have represented their countries on the sport's biggest stage.
Â
Despite missing five games due to national team obligations, Shaw is Tennessee's leading scorer this season with 16 points via seven goals and a pair of assists. Before leaving for Texas, the senior forward from Spanish Town, Jamaica netted her second-career hat trick in a 3-1 victory at Kentucky to earn SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Â
Since arriving on Rocky Top last season, Shaw has tallied 21 goals in 27 matches played - good for a program-best 0.78 goals-per-game average. The Tennessee striker was named the No. 14 player in all of NCAA Division I by TopDrawerSoccer.com earlier this season after earning First Team All-SEC and First Team All-Region accolades a year ago.
