Tennessee Baseball Newcomers to Watch: Part 2
October 30, 2018 | Baseball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee baseball team returns 22 players from last year's team but will also feature a handful of newcomers who could make an immediate impact for the Volunteers in Year 2 under head coach Tony Vitello.
In the final installment of the fall, we're highlight four newcomers for Tennessee this season in Max Ferguson, Trey Lipscomb, Ricky Martinez and Christian Scott.
High School: The Bolles School
Position: UTL
Class: Freshman
Height: 6-1
Weight: 175
About Max: Ferguson comes to Rocky Top from Atlantic Beach, Fla., after a prep career that saw The Bolles School earn back-to-back state championship titles. A utility, Ferguson was rated the 33rd-best outfielder in the state of Florida by Perfect Game. He garnered Rawlings-Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-America status as a senior and was named to the 2017 17U BCS National Championship All-Tournament Team.
Vitello on Ferguson: "Max has burst onto the scene at Tennessee in a way that has everyone talking, including some of the former big leaguers around. With some added strength, he could be a dynamic offensive player in our league. Some of the added value and excitement stems from the fact he can literally play seven positions on the field for us without showing a weakness at any."
High School: Urbana High School
Position: UTL
Class: Freshman
Height: 6-3
Weight: 190
About Trey: Lipscomb was a three-sport athlete at Urbana High School in Frederick, Md., starring on the baseball, football and basketball teams. The two-time Frederick News Post Player of the Year led Urbana to a district championship as a senior, batting .473 with eight home runs and a 1.12 ERA. He was tabbed the No. 5 overall prospect and No. 1 shortstop in Maryland by Perfect Game in 2018. Lipscomb was also named the MSABC Player of the Year and a 2018 Rawlings-Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-American.
Vitello on Lipscomb: "Trey is a legitimate two-way player. He throws strikes and competes on the mound every time out. He is in the mix for a role of some sort on that side of the ball. Offensively, I think he has had the appearance and even the results of an upperclassman. Like all of our new players, there is some growth and development that need to take place, but Trey is at an outstanding starting point. Never complains or blames, just a get it done guy."
High School: Pflugerville High School
Previous School: Sacramento State/Grayson College
Position: INF
Class: Junior
Height: 6-0
Weight: 175
About Ricky: Martinez joins the Vols after splitting his first two collegiate seasons at Sacramento State and Grayson College. The infielder averaged .359 with 43 RBIs and 49 runs scored as a sophomore for Grayson College in 2018. At Sacramento State, Martinez played in 54 games with 45 starts and became the starting third baseman at the beginning of WAC play. He hit .296 with nine doubles, 11 RBIs and 28 runs scored as a freshman for the Hornets. Martinez earned All-District honors four times while at Pflugerville High School, hitting .330 with nine doubles during the 2015 season. He also earned 6A All-State Third Team accolades in 2015.
Vitello on Martinez: "Ricky is a true point guard on the infield. He can play any position and do it at a high level on the defensive end. His numbers at the plate were strong in junior college so we do not see any reason why that won't carry over at this level. He fills a large hole that existed last spring for us."
High School: Rossview High School
Position: CF
Class: Freshman
Height: 5-10
Weight: 168
About Christian: Scott hails from Clarksville, Tenn., where he starred in the outfield for Rossview High School, earning All-State honors in 2018. The three-time All-Mid State selection led the 2018 State Champion Hawks, batting .360 as a senior with 65 runs scored to help the team to 39-6 overall record. Prior to Rossview, Scott spent three years at Northeast High and helped the Eagles to a regional championship in 2017.
Vitello on Scott: "Christian Scott is as athletic as any player in the program. If he were on our team last year there is no doubt on my mind he would have accumulated a lot of innings for us even then. He plays in the outfield the way the three guys do for Boston. Additionally, he provides a threat on the bases. Both would have been serviceable last year but carry great value any time you are putting together a club."
