Lady Vols Sit in Second Through 36 Holes at Trinity Forest Invitational
October 29, 2018 | Women's Golf
Freshman Mikayla Bardwell (-3) is tied for second while three other Tennessee players join her in the top 10
DALLAS, Texas -- The University of Tennessee women's golf team sits in second after 36 holes of play in the SMU Trinity Forest Invitational.
The Lady Vols were led by four players inside of the top 10 on the leaderboard including freshman Mikayla Bardwell (-2) who enters the final round in the tied for second. Tennessee carded a two-round score of 580 (+4) and is seven off the leaders, Illinois, heading into Tuesday.
Bardwell, who carded the low first round of 69 (-3), has spent the entire tournament at or below par. The Lewisville, Texas native is the only player in the 66 player field to do so. Bardwell was as low as 5-under after starting our the first six holes in round two 2-under-par.
She will enter Tuesday just one off the leader in Illinois' Crystal Wang (-3). Waverly Whiston, who finished tied for 10th in last year's Trinity Forest, is one of three Lady Vols who are tied for fifth on the leaderboard.
Joining her is senior Ariana Macioce and freshman Malia Stovall at 2-over-par for the tournament. Stovall had a strong finish to her day as she was 3-under over her final six holes, carding birdies on the par-4 fifth, par-4 sixth and par-4 ninth coming in.
All three players had identical scorecards in round one and round two as they each carded rounds of 73 (+1) in both rounds in Dallas.
Tennessee will be paired with Illinois (-3) and UT-San Antonio (+12) who sit in first and third, respectively. Tomorrow will be a shotgun start with the first tee time scheduled for 9:00 a.m. (ET).
Coach's Take
On advantages of playing tournament last year:
"This is a really tricky course so having played before really helps. The conditions were much better today than they were last year. We knew what to expect." – Coach Judi Pavon
On chasing down the leaders tomorrow:
"Four of our players played really steady today. I expect them to compete well tomorrow and give Illinois a run. It's supposed to be pretty windy tomorrow so that may be good condition for us to catch them." – Coach Judi Pavon
