Tennessee grabs it's 11th home victory of the season to move into a tie for third in the SEC
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Tennessee volleyball team swept the South Carolina Gamecocks Wednesday night in Thompson-Boling Arena.
With the win, the Lady Vols (17-5, 8-2 Southeastern Conference) move into a tie for third in the conference with Missouri who is also 8-2 in the conference.
Tennessee was paced by a quick start from senior Erica Treiber. The Unionville, Mich. native killed six balls on her first six attacks of the match. Five of those kills came in the first set where Tennessee led nearly the entire way before a kill from freshman Lily Felts closed out the set 25-21 with a deep court kill.
Felts would also have both of her team-high two aces in the set. She also proved vital at the end of the second set helping Tennessee stave of three set points with three kills during extra points including the kill that put them ahead for good in the 29-27 set victory.
She was one of two Lady Vols to finish with double-digit as junior Tessa Grubbs led the team with 14 kills while Felts finished with 10 in the win over the Gamecocks (14-5, 6-4 SEC).
After a close second-set win, Grubbs helped Tennessee close out the match with eight of her kills coming in the final frame. The Lady Vols offense hit at a .382 clip in the third while holding the Gamecocks to .125 offensively closing out the match with a 25-19 set win.
From Coach Rackham:
On service pressure:
"I thought we served very tough. We have talked about service pressure and about being better servers for the last two weeks. I like where we are going in the right direction. It's not perfect yet but, it's getting there and it showed tonight. It put them in some tough positions." – Coach Eve Rackham
On Madison Coulter:
"The mentality that she plays with is great. You are just so happy she is on your team. She's a fighter. Even when she's not playing well, she has a short memory which is great for a libero if you get aced or don't pass well. I feel like she got better as the match went on which is good to see." – Coach Eve Rackham
On Erica Treiber:
"Her serve seems like it is just getting better and better. She worked a lot on it. She took it very seriously that she was going to be the serving middle this year. She takes her defense seriously in practice every day and it is paying off. The last couple of matches she has scored a bunch of points for us." – Coach Eve Rackham
From Tessa Grubbs:
On the win over South Carolina:
"It was extremely competitive out there. South Carolina is a big win for us. We haven't beaten them in years. It was one of those things where we came in on a roll. In order to keep that momentum, we have to keep this competitiveness to keep winning these matches."– Tessa Grubbs
On having a balanced offensive attack:
"The setters are doing a really good job of holding the middles so, every time we are getting one-on-one opportunities. The setters are really running it well and it starts from a great pass from the back row." – Tessa Grubbs
On Coach Rackham:
"She is really good at motivating you in ways that you don't think. She comes up with the right motivation when you need it. And she always stays calm and level headed which helps us out." – Tessa Grubbs
Standout Stat:
Tennessee is back on the road to face off against the Georgia Bulldogs on Sunday. The Bulldogs enter the weekend on a four-game losing streak and will play No. 14 Kentucky in Stegeman Coliseum on Friday night.
The match will air on SEC Network+ with the first serve scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (ET) in Athens, Ga.
