Freshman Malia Stovall wins first collegiate individual title by six strokes
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The University of Tennessee women's golf team captured its first title of the season, winning by 35 strokes at the Starmount Classic in Greensboro, N.C.
Freshman Malia Stovall takes home individual honors, carding a three-round total of 211 (-5) to win by six strokes over the field. In all, the Lady Vols had five of the seven golfers that traveled this week finish inside of the top 10 on the individual leaderboard.
After entering the day with a 13 shot advantage over the field, Tennessee remained aggressive on the course, making adjustments to have its best round of the tournament. After capitalizing on the par-5 fifth hole with three birdies, it put them under par for the round, a place the Lady Vols would remain the rest of the day.
Tennessee made the turn at 5-under-par for the day and was 23 shots clear of the competition at that point. By the end of the final round, the Lady Vols had carded a 282 (-6) which was the low score of the tournament by nine strokes. It bested any other team's final round by 18 strokes, helping the team pull away from the rest of the field.
