Lady Vols Card Low Final Round to Finish Third at Maryb S. Kauth Invitational
October 16, 2018 | Women's Golf
Senior Ariana Macioce and freshmen Mikayla Bardwell and Malia Stovall finish inside of top 10 on individual leaderboard
SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The University of Tennessee women's golf team finished in third at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
Battling through poor weather conditions at TPC San Antonio Canyons, the Lady Vols shot the low round of the day carding a final round 303 (+13) to help them move into a top three position on the leaderboard.
Tennessee passed University of Houston while nearly overtaking Marshall for second place in the tournament. The team finished just one stroke behind Marshall and also gained a stroke on the eventual champion, TCU.
The Lady Vols had three players finish inside of the top 10 on the individual leaderboard. Freshman Mikayla Bardwell finished as the top player on the team for the second time this season. She carded a team-low 75 (+3) to jump into a tie for eighth on the leaderboard.
This is Bardwell's third consecutive top-10 finish this season as she has finished either first or second for the Lady Vols in each of their four tournaments this season.
Joining her in the top 10, senior Ariana Macioce and freshman Malia Stovall who tied for 10th at the tournament with final rounds of 75 and 76, respectively. This is Stovall's second consecutive top 10 finish after winning the Starmount Fall Classic earlier this month.
The Lady Vols will conclude their fall schedule in two weeks when they head back to Texas for the SMU Trinity Forest Invitational in Dallas. Tennessee finished third in the event last season.
Coach's Take
On the strategy today:
"We wanted to be able to play today to have a shot to make up some stokes on the lead. We knew pars would be good. We tried to play smart and make as many pars as possible." – Coach Judi Pavon
On finishing the final round near the top:
"We caught TCU with about 6 holes to go, but they finished their round well and we made lots of bogeys coming in. We are disappointed to finish 3rd especially since we had a good round going. We just need to learn and get better at not letting shots slip away at the end." – Coach Judi Pavon
On Mikayla Bardwell:
"I have been really excited about Mikayla's play this season. She is a great teammate and super competitive and the college format has suited her well. I'm looking forward to seeing all she accomplishes during her career." -- Coach Judi Pavon
