Led by a 6-under back nine from junior Rhys Nevin, Tennessee nearly chases down eventual champions
JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. --Â The University of Tennessee men's golf team made a late charge in the final round of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
Led by a 6-under back nine from junior Rhys Nevin, the Vols (-29) nearly caught the eventual champions in East Tennessee State (-32). Tennessee entered the back nine 10 strokes off of the lead but, then the Vols started to pour in the birdies.
In the final nine holes, the team carded 14 birdies in total including 10 combined from Nevin and sophomore Spencer Cross. Nevin finished the final 10 holes of the round bogey free with six birdies and four pars. The junior tied for sixth on the individual leaderboard at 10-under-par for the tournament. Tennessee could finish just three strokes shy of tying the host Buccaneers for the lead.
Joining Nevin in the top 15 on the leaderboard was redshirt sophomore Tyler Johnson and junior Hunter Wolcott. Both finished the final round under par as Johnson (-8) posted a 2-under round on Sunday to tie for 10th while Wolcott (-7) carded a 1-under round to tie for 12th on the individual leaderbord.
Junior Brayden Garrison, who was even par, at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Sunday, posted his third top 25 finish of the season as he recorded a 54-hole score of 213 (-3) tying for 22nd on the leaderboard.
This was the final tournament of the fall schedule. Tennessee posted three top three finishes in four events which included a pair of victories at the Carpet Capital Collegiate and the Inverness Intercollegiate. The Vols are back on the course again in February, starting the spring schedule at the Southwestern Invitational in Westlake Village, Calif.
Coach's Take
On the play of Nevin and the late charge:
"Rhys played a really good nine holes and he gave himself an opportunity to putt for a birdie on every hole. He masked what was probably an opportunity lost. That is something we'll learn from it and move forward from it heading into the spring season." -- Coach Brennan Webb
On finishing in the top three in three of four fall tournaments:
"Despite the disappointment from today, we would have definitely signed up for that. But now, they have bigger expectations expectations for themselves and know that they can compete with anyone in the country. That is a great sign for the program as we move forward." -- Coach Brennan Webb
Player's Take
On what started his back run:
"I took a big risk on the par-5 10th hole. I went for the green from 240 out of the rough and when that risk payed off, I was determined to go low that back 9. " - junior Rhys Nevin
On the momentum the fall schedule gives heading into spring:
"Top 3 finishes are okay but, we want to win them all. This semester overall has been really positive but, we know we can get better. We're all looking forward to pushing each other to get better in the off-season." - junior Rhys Nevin
