February 25, 2019 | Men's Golf
Tennessee was led by junior Hunter Wolcott (-3) who is tied for fifth on the individual leaderboard
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. – The No. 22 University of Tennessee men's golf team sits in fourth after 36 holes of play at the Southwestern Invitational.
Through two rounds of play, the Vols totaled a score of 581 (+5) and just three shots off of No. 16 Cal who sits in third and three strokes ahead of No. 12 Pepperdine. After UT completed the second round, play was suspended due to darkness with six teams still on the course.
Â
Tennessee was led by junior Hunter Wolcott who is tied for fifth on the individual leaderboard at 3-under-par. After an opening round 72 (E), Wolcott was tied for 10th and four strokes off the individual lead.
Â
The junior would spend almost the entire second round below par after birding his second and third holes of the round. In all, Wolcott carded five birdies in the second round to jump into the top five on the leaderboard.
Â
Joining Wolcott in the top 25 is junior Brayden Garrison and redshirt junior Nolan Ray. Garrison, who is tied for 14th entering the final day, got his day off to a quick start when he birdied two of the first three holes in round one.
Â
He spent the entire day inside of the top 15 on the leaderboard as he will look to complete his third top-15 finish of the season tomorrow.
Â
Ray also had a strong first round, hovering at even par throughout the first round. The redshirt junior was tied for 14th after round one at 1-over-par with a pair of birdies. He added a third on the par-4 second in round two as he is tied for 25th through 36 holes of play.
Â
Second round play will be completed tomorrow morning starting at 10:30 a.m. ET. Following the completion of round two, tee times for the third round will be set.
Coach's Take
On competing with some of the best teams on the west coast:
"To come out to California, in our first tournament of the spring and play the four best golf schools in the state who are all nationally ranked programs and be able to compete with them is another sign for us that we can compete with anyone." – Coach Brennan Webb
On adjustments heading into final day of play:
"We just need to tidy some things up in the scoring areas. Definitely could see a little rust out there with it being our first competitive round in a few months. I expect us to play a very good round tomorrow with all five guys in the game all day." – Coach Brennan Webb
