Junior Hunter Wolcott cards 6-under second round to help lead Tennessee to 10-under day
JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. --Â The University of Tennessee men's golf team sits in third at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate through two rounds of play.
Led by a 6-under-par round from junior Hunter Wolcott, the Vols (-21) carded a second round score of 278 closing within six strokes of the tournament leaders in host East Tennessee State.
Wolcott would card a collegiate-low 66 on Saturday with just one bogey on the scorecard. The Burns, Tenn. native quickly wiped it away with an eagle on the par-5 14th before closing out the round with a birdie on the par-3 16th.
The round helped Wolcott jump up 26 spots on the leaderboard as he is now tied for eighth at 6-under for the tournament. Joining him in a tie for eighth are teammates Rhys Nevin and Tyler Johnson who carded rounds of 2-under and 1-under, respectively.
Nevin finished the back nine bogey-free while birding both the par-5 10th and 14th to help him card his second round 70.
Junior Brayden Garrison was the fourth player in the lineup to card a round under par finishing with a 71 (-1) with four birdies to his name.
Tennessee will tee off in the final group of the day with East Tennessee State (-27) and Kent State (-25). The first tee time of the day is scheduled for 10:10 a.m. (ET) in Jonesborough, Tenn.
Coach's Take
On the second round of play:
"I think we played fine today and we're are six shots back heading into tomorrow which is nothing in college golf when you are counting four scores. I feel good about today. Nothing too special but, Hunter played great. These guys are good enough that someone is going to play well every day. The way the course is set up and how soft the greens are it is setting up to be a great day." - Coach Brennan Webb
On mindset heading into final round:
"Getting to put last week past us, we didn't spend any time reflecting or focusing on why we didn't play well. We moved on and had a benefit of having a tournament right behind it. I'm very excited how they have responded the last couple of days. They didn't lose any of the confidence they earned the first two weeks. If we come out and play well tomorrow, we may win we may not. It is great to have three really good tournaments out of four." - Coach Brennan Webb
Player's Take
On his collegiate-low round of 66:
"All day I was just trying to stay really patient and I had a couple putts drop. Heading into the back nine there are some holes you can really take advantage of like No. 14 and No. 10, the par-5 holes. I played those 3-under. Just giving myself some putts was huge. I think I hit all but one green on the back nine so, having eight good looks for birdie really helps out." - junior Hunter Wolcott
On confidence heading into final round:
"We have a lot to build on. We didn't play our best last week so. we are trying to come out here and prove the first two tournaments weren't a fluke. I think we're going to have a chip on our shoulder all year because people are not going to realize that Tennessee golf is on the map. Hopefully, we come out here tomorrow and put ourselves in position to win." - junior Hunter Wolcott
