Lady Vols Defeat Memphis, ETSU in Tennis Doubleheader
January 27, 2018 | Women's Tennis
The Lady Vols notched a 6-1 win over Memphis in the opening match and went on to top ETSU, 4-0, later in the day.
After Tennessee won all three doubles matches, neither Gabby Schuck on court 5 nor Chelsea Sawyer on court 6 dropped a game in singles — each picking up 6-0, 6-0 wins — to give Tennessee a quick 3-0 lead against ETSU (0-2).
From there, Johanna Silva finished off ETSU's Melissa Esguerra 6-3, 6-2 on court 4 to clinch the win for Tennessee.
Against Memphis (2-1) in the first match of the day, Ariadna Riley and Kaitlin Staines secured the doubles point for the Lady Vols with a 7-6 (2) on court 2 in the decider.
Staines went on to clinch the match in singles for Tennessee at 4-0 with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Memphis's Katherine Cao on court 5.
The Vols return home on Friday, Feb. 2, for a doubleheader against UT Martin (11 a.m. and 3 p.m.) at Goodfriend Tennis Center. Admission and parking are free for all matches this year.
QUOTES
Head Coach Alison Ojeda:
"It was great to be back home, but it was a little different and I'm not 100 percent sure why, so we'll try to figure that out. I'm not sure if we were nervous to play in front of our home crowd, but ti was a little bit different. So I'm excited to be able to come back out here on Friday because I wouldn't want to hit the road again after today, I think we need to get back out here in front of as many fans as we can on Friday and try to get that experience all over again."
"I've been really pleased with our performance this spring. In the fall I always remember going into the tournament thinking one thing and coming out thinking another. The same exact thing happened last weekend, we went into those matches and the girls stepped up and completed their tails off. From start to finish they were just mentally tough, and that's ultimately what won those matches last weekend. Today, we have quite a few things we need to work on, so we'll talk about that and try to figure out how to get better for Friday."
"I think Sadie (Hammond) has done an unbelievable job taking a verbal and physical leadership role with the team, and Gabby is right there. She comes out every single day and is a coach's dream as far as what you want from work ethic. So from a leadership standpoint, she leads by example."
