WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The Tennessee women's tennis team capped off its opening weekend with a 6-1 win on the road over William & Mary at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center on Sunday.
The Lady Vols (2-0) split the first two courts in doubles, but the duo of Sadie Hammond and Gabby Schuck gave UT a 1-0 lead with a win over Rosie Cheng and Lauren Goodman on Court 1. Ariadna Riley teamed up with Kaitlin Staines on Court 2 to down Ekaterina Stepanova and Olivia Thaler, 6-4.
In singles, Tennessee wasted no time in sealing the victory, winning in straight sets on the first three courts to finish. Staines claimed her second win of the weekend, beating Thaler, 6-3, 6-2. Hammond defeated Clara Tanielian, the 68th-ranked player in the country, in a 6-0, 6-3 match. The win marked Hammond's first over a ranked player this season.
Like Saturday, Riley clinched the match for the Lady Vols on Court 3, breezing past Stepanova in a 6-2, 6-2 match. The two teams decided to play out the match, allowing UT to get a pair of wins on the remaining courts. Schuck downed Natalia Perry, 6-4, 6-3, and Tenika McGiffin beat Goodman, 7-5, 6-4.
The Lady Vols return home next Saturday for a doubleheader with in-state foes Memphis (11 a.m.) and ETSU (3 p.m.) at Goodfriend Tennis Center. Admission and parking are free for all matches this year.
