MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Junior Khadija Shaw scored her fourth goal of the weekend to lead Tennessee to a 2-0 victory over Middle Tennessee on Sunday at Dean A. Hayes Stadium.
Tennessee is now 6-0 and off to its best start to a season in program history, surpassing the 5-0 record to open 2012. Middle Tennessee fell to 0-4.
Shaw, who recorded Tennessee's first hat trick since 2011 in a 3-0 Friday win over Belmont, tallied what proved to be the game-winner over the Blue Raiders in the 20th minute, scoring up the middle on a pass from redshirt junior Meghan Flynn.
The Vols extended their lead in the second half after multiple close calls. Redshirt junior Anna Bialczak evaded defenders down the right side and found freshman McKinley Burkett in front of the net, who scored her third goal of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Shae Yanez and the Tennessee defense recorded their fifth shutout in six matches this season. Tennessee has not allowed a goal in the last 344 minutes, and Yanez had four saves.
The Vols out-shot Middle Tennessee 15 to 9 with eight shots on goal. Redshirt junior Josie Jennings had a season-high four shots.
Tennessee concludes its non-conference schedule with a Thursday road match at Bucknell and a Sunday home match against Virginia Tech, a team, like Tennessee, receiving votes in the United Coaches top 25 poll. Sunday's match against Virginia Tech begins at 6 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
