Cieplucha, Abbott Lead White Team in Intrasquad Meet
September 29, 2017 | Swimming & Diving
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Behind three-win efforts by Tess Cieplucha and Taylor Abbott, the White team defeated the Orange team 521.5 - 390.5 on Friday at the annual Orange and White Intrasquad Meet to open the swimming and diving season at Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.
Cieplucha and Abbott both won the 1,000-yard freestyle, the 200 butterfly and the 500 freestyle in the women's and men's competitions to lift the White team to its second consecutive victory in the annual contest.
Abbott has already put together two leading efforts for the White team in his first two intrasquad meets, having won the same three events last year as a freshman.
The White team led 161-157 in points earned in competitions during practice earlier in the week. The Orange team briefly led after sweeping the men's and women's leadoff race — the 200 medley relay — but the White team won seven consecutive races to take the lead for good.
Other multi-event winners included: Bailey Grinter (100 back, 50 free - tie), Stanzi Moseley (50 free - tie, 100 free), Rachel Rubadue (1-meter, 3-meter diving) and Meghan Small (200 back, 200 IM) for the women, and Matthew Garcia (100 back, 200 back) and Kyle DeCoursey (50 free, 100 free) for the men.

HEAD COACH MATT KREDICH
"It kind of wakes us out of a training mode into a competition mode. We compete often in practice. Competition is the engine that drives improvement. When you start keeping score on the Orange and White level, it moves our team into a different orbit. All week we've had some kind of competition every practice. This year, they took it more seriously maybe than they have in the past. It's cool to add points in the weight room, in morning practice, in afternoon practice, in diving practice. They entered the meet within four points of each other. It was really important for our freshmen to get a feel for the flow of the meet.
DIVING COACH DAVE PARRINGTON
"We had five new Tennessee divers out there today. Colin, of course, is a veteran diver and has been here all summer training. That's good. He didn't feel that new to us, but then we had four freshmen. I'm pretty pleased with how everybody did. In this type of event, it's a lot different. It's a different format and it's more like a competitive training situation. So we saw some mistakes, not just by youngsters but some of the veterans. There was a good, competitive vibe and good to see freshman Will Hallam get up and win on 3-meter."
