World Rowing Championships: Jones and Kyridou Advance

Sarasota, Fla. -- Two rowers with Tennessee ties are competing for world titles at the 2017 World Rowing Championships in Sarasota, Fla. this week.

Current Lady Vol, Anneta Kyridou, has advanced to the semifinals of the Women's Double Sculls with partner Nikolaidou Aikaterini. The pair, representing Greece, logged a time of 6:58.000 in their first heat, finishing third behind Italy and New Zealand and advancing to the semifinals. Their time was the seventh fastest of the day out of 14 nations competing. The pair will race again on Friday, Sept. 29 at 11:35 a.m. The three fastest boats in each semifinal race will advance to the finals on Sunday, Oct. 1.

Former Lady Vol rower Mary Jones is also competing, representing the United States in the Women's Lightweight Single Sculls. She finished second in the second heat of the day, posting a time of 7:23.490 to advance to the semifinals. Patricia Merz of Switzerland won the heat with a time of 7:41.630. Jones' time was the second fastest of the day out of fifteen countries represented. She will race again at 10:41 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28., facing off against Cuba, Sweden, Ireland, Italy and Mexico for a chance to advance to the finals on Friday, Sept. 29.
