Kyridou To Represent Greece At World Rowing Championships
September 23, 2017 | Rowing
SARASOTA, Fla. -- Sophomore rower Anneta Kyridou will be representing her country of Greece at the 2017 World Rowing Championships in Sarasota, Fla. beginning Sunday.
Â
Kyridou will be competing in the women's double sculls alongside Aikaterini Nikolaidou, an experienced national team veteran and former Olympian. The pair will be competing against teams from 14 other nations.
Â
"I am very happy that I can represent my country in the sport that I love," said Kyridou. "In this event I am racing with an Olympian who finished fourth (in Rio de Janeiro), and we are a new crew, but our goal is to compete on the final day."
Â
Kyridou has trained with the Greece National Team since 2013. Earlier this summer she competed in the 2017 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Bulgaria, finishing third with partner Dimitra-Sofia Tsamopoulou.
Â
Her other international accomplishments include finishing second in doubles in both the 2016 World Rowing Junior Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands and the 2016 European Rowing Junior Championships in Trakai, Lithuania.
Â
"We are so pleased with the improvement Anneta has shown and the opportunities she has earned," said Tennessee Head Rowing Coach Lisa Glenn. Â Â
Â
"Anneta is the type of person that Tennessee was designed to support: a dedicated, hardworking and honest athlete. Â At Tennessee, we are all about high performance and supporting those who seek the top level, earnestly, in whatever they do."
Â
The 2017 World Rowing Championships will begin on Sunday, Sept. 24, and conclude on Sunday, Oct. 1.Â
Â
Former Lady Vol rower Mary Jones will also be among the more than 900 athletes vying for a world championship in Sarasota, competing in the lightweight singles for the United States.
