Lady Vols Advance in Day 1 of Fall Classic

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Tennessee women's tennis team began its fall season Friday, competing in two rounds of doubles and a round of singles at Mickel Tennis Center in the Debbie Southern Fall Classic.
Beginning the day with doubles, the duo of junior Sadie Hammond and freshman Tenika McGiffin went 2-0 to advance to the Flight 2 final. They defeated Texas' Marta Perez-Mur and Dani Wagland, 8-6, in the first round and Ohio State's Olivia Sneed and Mary Beth Hurley, 8-7, in the second round.
The teams of Ariadna Riley and Gabby Schuck as well as Johanna Silva and Chelsea Sawyer dropped their doubles matches.
In singles, McGiffin earned the first singles win of her career, downing Maggi Kane of North Carolina, 7-6 (3), 6-2. Silva edged out Petra Hule of Florida State in three sets, 6-7, 7-5, 6-2. Schuck picked up a 6-1, 6-4 win against Furman's Carol Elizabeth Kerman.
"Overall, we played well in our first doubles matches of the season," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "We challenged our girls to come out with energy and focus on serves and returns. We did all of that. The tactical understanding and execution will continue to develop. I'm proud we made our opponents compete."
Play will begin at 9 a.m. tomorrow with a round of doubles followed by a round of singles.
