Newell, Lady Vols Capture Third Place

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- In the 21st annual Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship, senior Anna Newell led Tennessee to a third place finish. The Volunteers carded an impressive 280, the fourth lowest round in tournament history, on Tuesday.
UT jumped up three spots into third with the help of Newell's third sub-70 round of the tournament. The Tampa native turned in a perfect card with three birdies for her final 18 holes to also take home third place. Over the course of the championship, Newell shot a seven-under 206 (69-69-68).
As a team, the Lady Vols finished with a combined score of 860 (+8) after rounds of 295, 285 and 280. It is the 10th lowest score in the history of the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship.
In the team effort, Blakesly Warren had her best finish since tying for 8th place at the 3M Augusta Invitational last season. The senior also shot 68 in the final round to finish the tournament tied for 14th place at one-under (212).
Freshman Waverly Whiston carded a final round of 70 en route to a 34th place tie (220, +7). The score marked the lowest of her collegiate career and her first below par since donning the orange and white.
Finishing just two strokes behind Whiston, Micheala Williams recorded 222 (+9) to tie for 43rd place while Mariah Smith tallied 226 (+13) over 54-holes, tying for 62nd place.
Individually, junior-transfer Ariana Macioce finished best for the Lady Vols as she tied Williams for 43rd place (222, +9) after shooting 71 in the final round. Three strokes behind her, Haley Wagner finished her first tournament for Tennessee tied for 56th place (225, +12). Allison Herring rounded out scores for UT as she duplicated her first round score of 77 to tie for 78th place (235,+22).
Illinois took home the team title with a tournament-record 840 (-12) while Kent State finished one-stroke behind for second place (841, -11). The Fighting Illini crushed the previous 54-hole record of 847 set by Kent State in 2015 by seven strokes.
Wake Forest's Emilia Migliaccio earned medalist honors after shooting a nine-under 204 (-9). Migliaccio also set a new individual 54-hole record with the score. Ana Gonzalez of UTSA tied the previous low total of 205 to place second (-8).
Tennessee returns to action Sunday, October 1, in Starkville, Mississippi, for the three-day Magnolia Invitational.
