KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee track and field notched 11 personal bests, 15 top-five finishes and two event wins as the team hosted day two of the Tennessee Relays on Friday at Tom Black Track at Laporte Stadium.
Christian Coleman opened his outdoor season in the 100m competition, posting a time of 10.03 seconds. The junior from Atlanta posted the fastest time in the NCAA this year and the fifth-fastest mark in the world so far this year. Coleman blazed past the rest of the field, winning by .28 seconds despite slowing up over the final five meters and running against a -0.8 wind. Bruce DeGrilla took fifth place with a personal best time of 10.57.
In the women's long jump, Cidae'a Woods claimed victory with a distance of 6.15m (20-2.25). It was Woods' second career victory in the long jump. On the men's side, DeGrilla came in fifth place, leaping 7.41m (24-03.75).
Tennessee found more success in the women's 100m dash, as three athletes finished in the top six. Shania Collins recorded a time of 11.54 seconds, good for second place, and Woods and Maia McCoy both crossed the line in 11.73 seconds to claim fifth and sixth.
Three Vols placed in the top seven of the women's shot put competition. Cassie Wertman and Stamatia Scarvelis notched third and fourth place finishes, respectively, and Tamia Crockett finished seventh with a personal best throw of 15.21m (49-11). Wertman had a strong opening throw that went 16.81 meters (55-2.00), while Stamatia (16.08m/59-09.25) and Crockett recorded their best score on their third throw.
UT also posted high scores in the women's 200m, with McCoy (23.64, -0.5) and Lenysse Dyer (23.67, +0.2) finishing in the top four. Nathan Strother finished eighth in the men's race with a time of 21.48 seconds (+1.4).
Tristan Slater claimed a second place finish in the men's pole vault, clearing 5.10m (16-8.75) on his final attempt at that height. Nick Hassler came in fifth (55.32m/181-06) in the javelin.
Zach Long placed fourth in the men's 800m run, finishing with a time of 3:46.45. Teammates Adam Johnston and Tyler Woodrome also competed, with Johnston finishing in 21st place and Woodrome finishing 27th.
The second day of the Tennessee Relays began with the conclusion of the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon. The weather was much more favorable than Thursday's for the multis athletes, as the conditions remained sunny and in the mid-50's throughout the afternoon.
Maya Neal turned in another strong performance on Friday, finishing in fourth place of the heptathlon competition. The sophomore from Naperville, Illinois, earned 4,905 points over seven events. Neal kicked off the day with a third-place finish in the long jump, leaping 5.83m (19-1.50). She then dominated in the javelin, posting the best mark of the competition with a throw of 41.45m (136-00), more than three meters further than the second-place distance.
Darryl Harris finished the decathlon competition in eighth place, recording an overall score of 5,617 points. He picked up his fourth second-place finish over two days in the 1500m run with a time of 4:51.00. Harris also received 634 points in the 110m hurdles, recording a time of 16.91.
