KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee track and field wrapped up the 50th running of the Tennessee Relays up on a strong note Saturday at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium with four relay victories highlighting the final day of actions.
Tennessee honored six seniors on the women's track and field team: Chelsea Blaase, Candice Butler, Kali Davis-White, Rebecka Miranda, Brielyn Rogers and Cassie Wertman. In addition, SEC Champion and All-American Cameron Brown was the lone senior honored for the men. Tennessee also handed out three awards prior to the start of the final day of competition. Nathan Strother was named the Ed Murphey Award winner for most outstanding Male Athlete for the 2016 season. Wertman earned the Chuck Rohe Leadership Award and Christian Coleman was presented with the trophy for the USTFCCCA National Indoor Athlete of the Year.
The highlight of the day on the field for Tennessee came from the 4x100 relays, where both the men and women claimed first place. Tennessee's women (Cidaea Woods, Maia McCoy, Lenysse Dyer and Shania Collins) got things going with a time of 44.16 good for a .74-second margin of victory and the 12th fastest time in the country. Then the men's team, consisting of Bruce DeGrilla, Coleman, Malik Elion and Nathan Strother followed up with a strong time, posting a mark of 39.65.
The Tennessee men's and women's team also dominated the 4x400 relays. For the women, three of the four who won the 4x100, Collins, McCoy and Dyer, in addition to Brooklynn Broadwater, posted a time of 3:34.93 good for their best time this season by seven seconds. In the final event of the day, the men's 4x400 team of Strother, Coleman, Elion and Ari Cogdell ran 3:05.61 to claim victory.
Coleman earned the Tony Wilson Award winner for men's track. The Tony Wilson award is given out to the top men's and women's track and field athletes at the Tennessee Relays. Coleman earned it after a 10.03 second race in the 100m on Friday, which was .01 seconds off the facility record, but it was the top mark in the NCAA this year and fifth-fastest mark in the world.
In the men's discus, Tennessee's Matthew Zajac finished fourth with a throw of 55.95m. #VFL and 2016 Olympian Tavis Bailey also competed, throwing 58.38m, good for second overall. Tamia Crockett followed up her strong performance in shot put yesterday with another impressive display in women's discus today. Crockett's best throw came in her third try, good for 48.26m and ninth place.
Tennessee had two women place in the top six for triple jump. In addition to winning the 4x100, Woods had a strong showing in the triple jump, registering a 12.33m good for third place and her second best jump in competition this year. LaChyna Roe finished sixth in the triple jump, with a 12.04m
Marcellus Fletcher placed eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 14.7m, the second best jump of any Tennessee athlete in competition this season. Meanwhile, Weldon Wright finished tenth with a jump of 14.18m
In other action on Saturday, Indiana's Sydney Clute set the facility and meet record in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.40m (14-5.25) and was named the women's field Tony Wilson Award winner. Katherine Receveur earned the Tony Wilson Award for women's track as she finished second in the 1500m and led Indiana to a win in the Distance Medley Relay. Josh Freeman won the men's field award as he won the shot put competition with a mark of 20.72m (67-11.75) after competing unattached.
