KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee track and field opened the Tennessee Relays on a rainy and windy Thursday at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium.
The relays opened with the women's heptathlon and the men's decathlon. The student-athletes had to deal with temperatures in the 40s and wind gusts up to 20 miles per hour for large parts of the day.
Maya Neal dealt with those conditions well and sits in fourth place of the heptathlon competition with 2824 points through four events. Neal finished sixth in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.61 seconds to open up the Tennessee Relays. Neal went on to take fifth in the shot put with a throw of 10.15m (33-3.75). She finished the first day of competition with a strong 200m run. Neal took second in her heat with a time of 26.06 and finished fifth overall.
Darryl Harris also sits in fourth place after the first day of competition in the decathlon. Harris took second place in three of the five decathlon events on Thursday. Harris received 910 points in the 100m as he ran a wind-aided time of 10.78 seconds. He followed that up with a strong showing in the long jump as he leaped 6.77m (22-2.5). Harris closed day one as he won his heat and finished second overall in the 400m with a time of 51.77. Harris was in lane three for the race and really accelerated over the final 150m to finish 1.57 seconds ahead of everyone else in his race.
Stamatia Scarvelis and Candice Butler finished fifth and sixth in a talented hammer throw competition. The competition featured four of the top 10 hammer throwers in the country so far this season. Scarvelis needed a mark on her third throw after fouling off her first two throws, and she came through with a throw of 58.08m (190-7). Butler posted her best toss of 57.79m (189-7) on her final attempt to claim sixth place. Savannah Marlow took 13th place with a throw of 48.51m (159-2).
The men's hammer throw saw three Vol throwers make the final of the competition and two Vols place in the top three. Cameron Brown led the way with the second best throw of his career. That throw came on his final attempt as Brown let out a scream as he released the throw of 66.09m (216-10). That throw allowed him to move past teammate Seth Whitener. Whitener notched a throw of 63.15m (207-2) on his first attempt of the competition to finish in third. Matthew Zajac entered the final with a mark of 56.56m, but bettered that with his fifth-round attempt, which landed at 57.12m (187-5).
Tennessee will return to action on Friday morning at 10 a.m. as the multis begin day two of competition. The track events begin at 2:45 with the women's 400m hurdles. The field events begin at three with both the men's and women's long jump. Olympian and reigning 60m and 200m indoor champion Christian Coleman will compete in the men's 100m competition at 3:40 p.m. The meet will be streamed on WatchESPN/ESPN3 starting at 3 p.m. ET.
