Jones, Vols Rally For 4-2 Win Over Alabama

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Freshman Scott Jones rallied for the three-set victory to lift the Tennessee men’s tennis team past Alabama 4-2 on Thursday at Barksdale Stadium.
The Vols (10-13, 2-9) dropped the doubles point but dug in during singles with sophomores Timo Stodder and Srdjan Jakovljevic leading the way with straight-set wins. Junior Luis Valero brought the Vols up 3-2, setting the table for Jones’ 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 clinching victory over Edson Ortiz on court 4.
“It was another great team effort, a great team fight,” Tennessee head coach Sam Winterbotham said. “We’re very proud that they continue to give everything they’ve got.”
Stodder was first off court, up 6-4, 5-1 over 27th-ranked Mazen Osama who retired with Stodder just a game away at the top of the lineup. Seconds later, sophomore Srdjan Jakovljevic put Tennessee ahead 2-1 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Alexey Nesterov.
Alabama tied the match again at 2-2 when Spencer Richey defeated Luca Wiedenmann 6-4, 6-3 on court 6. From there, both teams needed to win two of the remaining three courts.
Junior Luis Valero brought the Vols within a point of clinching, rolling past No. 97 Thibault Cancel 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 on court 2.
Jones, who dropped his opening set, trailed Ortiz early in the first set but broke to tie the set 3-3. Serving at 4-4, he fought off two break points to go ahead 5-4 and capitalized on his second match point.
Tennessee plays Charlotte at 5 p.m.
