FRUMIN RECEIVES NCAA POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP
April 12, 2017 | Rowing
Tennessee senior Chandler Frumin has been selected for the NCAA Women’s Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship, a $7,500 award given to just 13 female college graduates across all NCAA institutions.
Frumin is set to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in sports management in May, completing it in only three years and maintaining a GPA of 3.8. Frumin is a three-year member of the varsity rowing team and was a member of the Big 12 Academic All-Conference team in 2015 and 2016. She was also named a CRCA Scholar-Athlete in 2016.
Frumin rowed in the two seat for the 1V8+ at the 2016 Big 12 Conference Championship in which the crew finished third place. She was also part of the 2X that took first place in 2016 Head of the Hooch with a time of 19:12.8.
Already accepted into the sports management masters program at the University of Texas at Austin, Frumin plans to pursue a career in athletics administration.
“I hope to rise through the ranks to become a Division 1 athletic director some day,” said Frumin. “I believe there are only three female athletic directors out of some 65 universities in Power Five conferences, and I hope to change that.”
Frumin is quick to give credit to her advisors and mentors at UT who have helped her achieve her academic goals.
“Denise Jilka (Tutor Coordinator/Academic Counselor), Kayla Smith (Director of Student-Athlete Development), Mike Ward (Senior Associate Athletics Director) and Don Bruce (Faculty Athletics Representative) have all been a huge help in getting me to where I’m at today,” said Frumin. “Academics have always been a big thing in my book, so for me, it’s great to have them as essentially another set of coaches that are there to help me academically and professionally.”
During her time at UT, Frumin has been very involved in the university outside of athletics, spending time on the Student Government Association, Student Advisory Committee and the University’s Commission for LGBT people while also completing an internship in the Tennessee Athletics Media Relations office.
“I am so proud of Chandler and all that she has accomplished at Tennessee, and I am delighted that she has chosen to pursue a career in intercollegiate athletics administration,” said Dr. Don Bruce. “She has made the University of Tennessee a better place during her time on Rocky Top, and she is certainly a deserving recipient of this prestigious award. I know that it will enable her to pursue her ultimate dream of becoming a Division I Athletics Director.”
This marks the third year in a row that a member of the rowing team has received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship; Sarah McAuliffe earned the award in 2015 and Harper Lucas received it in 2016.
“People need to understand that the NCAA only awards a total of 13 of these Women’s Enhancement Graduate Scholarships each year, across all member institutions, all divisions, and all sports. That fact that Chandler is our third rower in three years to receive one of them speaks volumes about the quality of our rowing program and the opportunities that UT Athletics provides to young women,” said Bruce. “I applaud Coach Lisa Glenn and our entire program for putting young women in a position to pursue this career path and to make a meaningful difference in women’s athletics.”
Frumin is set to walk across the stage on May 12, the day before she and the rest of the Tennessee Rowing team will take to the water to compete in the Big 12 Conference Championship.
