KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Despite a late comeback attempt, No. 12 Tennessee dropped its match to 30th-ranked Kentucky, 4-1, on Sunday at Barksdale Stadium.
"Today was a heartbreaker," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "The girls have been giving maximum effort every day, and that is why we are getting better. We are coming out here and putting ourselves in good situations in matches. We need match-play experience, but unfortunately, we can't get that between now and our next match. We are getting so much better, and I love it."
After splitting Courts 2 and 3 in doubles, the Vols (13-3, 0-2 SEC) were unable to edge the Wildcats on Court 1, dropping the doubles point. In singles, UT tied things up at 1-1, but Kentucky closed out the match, winning the next three courts to get the victory.
In doubles, the duo of Sadie Hammond and Gabby Schuck got a 6-2 win on Court 2 over Akvile Parazinskaite and Morgan Chumney. The doubles point came down to Court 1, where the team of Brittany Lindl and Eve Repic fell short to the fifth-ranked team of Mami Adachi and Aldila Sutjiadi, 6-4.
In singles, Schuck picked up the win to tie things at 1-1, defeating Morgan Chumney in a 6-2, 6-3 match. Lindl posted a strong performance against No. 13 Sutjiadi, but while Lindl was leading in the third set, the match went unfinished once Kentucky had clinched the contest.
"Gabby's win is massive," Ojeda said. "It's not because of who her opponent was; it's because people of have told her that she isn't good enough to play in the SEC. She proved them wrong today. I need her to be excited to win and have fun. I don't want her to be her own worst enemy. I am so excited for her. I need her to believe in herself. She did a fantastic job this weekend."
After dropping four of the six first sets, Tennessee was able to force three courts into a third set. Unfortunately, the Wildcats held off UT's late comeback and defeated the Volunteers, 4-1.
Tennessee is back on the road next weekend, travelling to Auburn on Friday and Alabama on Sunday in search of the Vols' first conference win.
