Men's Tennis Loses at Auburn, 5-2

AUBURN, Ala. -- The Tennessee men's tennis team won the doubles point but could not convert third-set matches in a 5-2 loss to Auburn Thursday.
The Vols (9-10, 1-6 SEC) picked up the doubles point for the first time in conference play with a new-look lineup.
Auburn (12-9, 3-4) gained momentumby winning five of six first sets to open singles play. While the Vols eventually extended four three-set matches, Auburn rallied to winthem all and take the match.
"We've made adjustments and were able to get the doubles point," Tennessee head coach Sam Winterbotham said. "We had great energy, which I thought was super. Going into singles, we put ourselves in position to take more first sets than we did. The effort was there. Guys gave everything they had, but we need to make more adjustments in singles and we'll find that winning formula."
Tennessee led at 2-1 when Luis Valero scored a 6-3, 7-5 win over Carles Sarrio, but the Tigers won the last four matches. Conner Huertas clinched the match by defeating Scott Jones 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 on court 3.
In the doubles point, Valero and Timo Stodder teamed up for the first time and scored a 6-4 victory over 18th-ranked Huertas and Max Hinnisdaels at the top of the lineup. Luca Wiedenmann and Srdjan Jakovljevic, who have played court 3 in recent weeks, stepped up to court 2 to win their first SEC match together 6-4.
The Vols play at Mississippi State on Saturday.
