Tennessee opened its outdoor season by hosting the Tennessee Rust Buster on Saturday at the newly resurfaced Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium. Tennessee had four performances that rank in the school's all-time top 10 marks. The Vols finished the day with eight event wins, 30 top-five finishes and 30 personal records.
Stamatia Scarvelis claimed first in the hammer throw when she threw a personal best of 61.30m (201-1), simultaneously passing Shanna Dickenson's 2007 record (60.43m) for first in the Tennessee record books. This is the second school record she's broken during her time with the Vols as she claimed the weight throw crown at the SEC Indoor Championship this year. In the same event, Savannah Marlow claimed seventh when she threw 53.59m (175-10), passing her previous personal best of 53.56 meters and moving into sixth on the school's all-time list. Candice Butler took sixth with a mark of 54.22m (177-11).
Shot putters Cassie Wertman, Scarvelis, and Tamia Crockett placed first, second, and fifth respectively in their event, with Crockett capturing a new personal best of 13.93m. Wertman is currently ranked fourth in the country and Scarvelis is ranked seventh. Scarvelis capped her day by throwing the ninth-best discus in school history with a mark of 51.98m. Crockett notched another personal best as she took fourth overall.
Seth Whitener also took fourth and moved to seventh on the All-Time Men's Outdoor Performances list for the hammer throw when he threw 62.54m (205-2), shattering his previous best of 60.32m. Matthew Zajac won the men's discus competition with a throw of 56.76m (186-03) which barely missed cracking the school's all-time top ten list.
In the women's long jump, Maya Neal placed fifth and posted a new personal record of 6.07m. LaChyna Roe also posted a new personal best of 5.47m. In the men's category, Bruce DeGrilla placed third with a jump at 7.33m. Marcellus Fletcher finished fifth overall in the men's triple jump at 14.83m.
Shania Collins, Lenysse Dyer, Brooklyn Broadwater posted personal records in the 200m dash at 23.08, 23.36, and 24.25, respectively. Collins took first and Dyer took third overall. Cidae'a Woods set a new personal record in the 100m, earning a third place finish overall with a time of 11.81.
In the women's 400m, Brooklynn Broadwater and teammate Layla White posted top-sixteen times in the country, with Broadwater claiming first and a personal best at 54.20, while White finished second with a time of 54.33.
In the men's 800m, Tennessee boasted two top-five finishes, with personal records from Zach Long (first at 1:50.51), Trey Quealy (fifth at 1:54.50) and Adam Johnston (1:55.02).
The men's 200m dash had over fifty runners, but that did not faze Nathan Strother who finished second overall with a mark of 21:32. Ari Cogdell took sixth with a time of 21.47, while Bruce DeGrilla (22.38) and Darryl Harris (21.85) notched career bests.
The Vols claimed three top-five finishes in the women's 3000m as sophomore Julia Rizor took second overall in 10:27.12. Her sister, Jessica Rizor, and Peighton Meske crossed the line in 10:29.69 and 10:32.43, taking fourth and fifth overall.
The men's 3000m had strong top-three finishes from Brad Swiney (8:34.92) and Wesley Robinson (8:35.95). The two drafted off of each other throughout the race as Swiney took second and Robinson finished in third.
The foursome of Broadwater, White, Collins and Dyer captured a second place finish as the Tennessee's women's 4x400m relay squad. Their time of 3:42.87 is the sixteenth best time in the nation this year.
The men's 4x400m relay team, consisting of Cogdell, Elion, Harris, and Strother won the competition with a time of 3:08.72, the fifth fastest time in the NCAA.
With the rest of the Vols cheering them on, Tennessee capped the day on the triple jump as LaChyna Roe and Rebacka Miranda placed first and second as both set outdoor personal bests.
The Vols will return to action next weekend at the Florida Relays before returning home to host the Tennessee Relays from April 6-8. Stay up to date with Tennessee track & field by following @Vol_Track on twitter.
