Whitener Wins Hammer on Day 1 of Florida Relays

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Tennessee track and field opened day one of the Florida Relays with four personal bests and an event win at James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track on Thursday.
Seth Whitener won the men's hammer college division with a personal best throw of 65.41m (214-7). Whitener surpassed his personal best four times in the competition as he defeated a field of 29 throwers to win the first competition of his collegiate career. Whitener led the field after his first three throws, but bettered his mark with his fifth throw to take the title. Whitener's throw was the third-best throw in school history. Matthew Zajac finished in seventh place with a mark of 57.37m (188-2).
Nick Hassler set a personal best in the javelin with a mark of 55.87m (183-4). He notched a 25th place finish while surpassing his previous personal best of 55.12m (180-10) which he set last week at the Tennessee Rust Buster.
Maia McCoy started things off for the Vols with a new personal best in the 200m dash. The sophomore dropped her personal best to 23.85 as she finished second place in her heat, and 16th overall.
Darryl Harris followed that up with his own personal best in the men's 400m dash. Harris posted a time of 48.71 to finish 25th overall in the competition. Harris dropped .45 seconds off his previous career best which he set at the LSU Alumni Gold Meet last April.
Malik Elion posted a wind-aided time of 21.51 to finish in 30th place in the men's 200m competition. The mark bettered Elion's 200m opener from 2016 when the sophomore posted a time of 21.74 at the Shamrock Invitational.
Four of the six Vols to compete on Thursday set personal bests, while Zajac posted his second-best mark in the hammer and Elion claimed the third-best 200m of his career.
