Led by senior Hannah Pietila, UT entered the final three holes in first place after leading the field for most of the day. A late surge by Daytona State College and untimely bogeys moved the Orange and White into a tie for second place with No. 23 Purdue.
With just one stroke differentiating first and second place and four Vols in the top-13 standings, Tennessee is poised to take control of the field once again in Round Two.
Pietila leads the team with six birdies and boasts the best par three average (2.50) of the tournament. She ended the first round with a birdie on 18 and finished the day tied for fourth place (71, -1).
Fellow senior Lucia Polo tied with junior Blakesly Warren for 10th place. The duo shot duplicate scores of 72 to remain even on the day. The pair combined for seven birdies in the round.
All-American Anna Newell, who also birdied 18, tied for 13th place after carding 73 (+1).
Newcomer Micheala Williams fired the most pars (14) of the day for Tennessee. She finished the first round in a tie for 51st place.
