COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Tennessee junior Christian Coleman qualified for the finals of the 60m and 200m races on day one of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at Texas A&M's Rhonda and Frosty Gilliam Jr. Indoor Track Stadium.
Coleman recorded the ninth-fastest 60m time in collegiate history as he ran a 6.50 time and finished as the top qualifier for tomorrow's final. Coleman is only the eighth person in collegiate history to run 6.50 or under. His mark ties for the third-fastest time at the NCAA Indoor Championship. That time is also tied for third-fastest time ever recorded in a qualifying heat. That mark is also the top time in the NCAA this year and a personal best for Coleman. He increases his second-place advantage in the school record book, but still trails Leonard Scott's 2001 mark of 6.48.
Additionally, Coleman's mark set a facility record previously held by Jacoby Ford of Clemson. Ford, who worked with Tennessee assistant coach Tim Hall, recorded the previous facility record of 6.51 at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championship. Coleman is the 15th Tennessee student-athlete to qualify for the finals of the 60m dash in the past 18 years.
Mustaqeem Williams took 10th place in the 60m dash with a time of 6.76. Williams finished sixth in the first heat as he was running in lane three.
Coleman also qualified for the finals of the 200m, becoming the 14th Vol in the past 18 years to make a 200m finals. The reigning 200m NCAA Champion qualified with the third-fastest time, as he crossed the line in 20.51.
That mark was the fourth-fastest time that Coleman has posted this year, even though he slowed up in the final 10m with his heat easily in hand. The other members of his heat finished 10th, 12th and 15th in the field of 16.
Tomorrow's action will begin at 4:30 p.m. ET as Darryl Sullivan takes part in the high jump competition. Tomorrow's events will be streamed live on ESPN3.
