Vols Win Seven Events On Day 1 in Virginia
February 03, 2017 | Track & Field
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Tennessee earned seven event wins at the Virginia Tech “Doc Hale” Elite Meet at Rector Field House. The Vols set 14 personal records and claimed 15 top three finishes on a dominant first day of competition.
Tennessee dominated the sprinting events as Christian Coleman and Malik Elion finished first and second on the men’s side while Shania Collins finished first on the women’s side followed by Maia McCoy in third and DeAndra Greer in fourth.
Coleman extended his national lead in the 60m dash as he tied a facility record and set a meet record with a time of 6.51. Coleman tied the mark of Clemson’s Jacoby Ford that was set in 2009. Coleman’s mark was also a personal record as he now sits second on Tennessee’s all-time record book. Malik Elion finished in second place with a personal best of 6.82. Nathan Strother followed up that performance by winning the 400m dash in the final event of the day. Strother finished in 47.60 in his best time of the season.
On the women’s side, Collins equaled her career high with a time of 7.35 while McCoy finished in 7.42 and Greer claimed fourth with a mark of 7.55.
Candice Butler claimed the women’s weight throw competition as she set a personal record by more than six feet. Butler’s first throw traveled 19.94m (65-5) besting her previous career best of 18.10m (59-4.75) which she set last week at the Razorback Invitational. Sophomore Stamatia Scarvelis finished in third place with a mark of 19.61m (64-4).
Seth Whitener and Matthew Zajac each set personal records in the weight throw as they took third and fourth place. Whitener surpassed his PR four times in the weight throw competition with his longest throw of 20.30m (66-7.25) coming on his first attempt. Zajac also set a new personal best with a toss of 19.75m (64-9.75) on his second attempt as he finished in fourth.
Cidae’a Woods claimed the long jump crown at the meet as she jumped 6.08m. The men’s distance relay squad also claimed a first place finish as Tyler Woodrome, Ari Cogdell, Chase Hilton and Adam Johnston crossed the line in 10:24.83.
Jessica Rizor won the women’s 3000m race as she finished in 10:07.12. Julia Rizor took third place with a time of 10:25.34 while Peighton Meske finished in fourth with a new personal best of 10:26.72.
Wesley Robinson led the way with a fourth place finish in the 3000m with a time of 8:27.52. Brad Swiney (fifth, 8:29.98), Nick Brey (sixth, 8:31.08) and Gashaw Duhamel (ninth, 8:42.21) all joined Robinson in setting personal bests.
Freshman Domonique Turner set a PR in the 60m hurdles as she took second place with a time of 8.36.
Sophomore Mustaqeem Williams participated in the long jump for the first time this year and he finished in fourth place with a mark of 6.95m (22-9.75).
