Coleman, Collins Earn MVP Honors at VT Elite Meet

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Christian Coleman and Shania Collins earned MVP honors as the Vols concluded action at the Virginia Tech "Doc Hale" Elite Meet on Saturday at Rector Field House.
Shania Collins tied her PR and won her second event of the meet as she finished the 200m in 23.63. Collins won the 60m on Friday evening as she tied her personal best of 7.35 seconds in that race as well. Maia McCoy took third place in the 200m as she finished in 23.81.
Coleman earned the MVP honors after setting a fieldhouse record in the 60m dash with a time of 6.51. He now is the 2017 world leader in the event with that mark.
Tennessee concluded the event with 10 event wins, 22 personal records and 25 top-three finishes over the two-day meet.
Cidae'a Woods won the triple jump competition with a personal record of 12.69m (41-7.75). Woods' leap ranks fifth in the school's all-time record book. Brielyn Rogers set a season-high in the event as she jumped 12.42m (40-9) to claim third place. LaChyna Roe finished in sixth with a mark of 12.15m (39-10.5)
The women's 4x400m team of Layla White, Shania Collins, Brooklynn Broadwater and Maia McCoy notched a win as they crossed the line in 3:43.24.
Freshman Marcellus Fletcher set a personal record in the triple jump as he traveled 15.01m (49-3) on his fifth jump, which secured third place. Fletcher surpassed his previous career best of 14.72m on four occasions during Saturday's competition.
Domonique Turner and Darryl Sullivan each took second place in their respective high jump competitions. Turner cleared 1.64m (5-4.5) on her final attempt. Sullivan fell just short of his own personal best when he finished in 2.14m (7-0.25).
Stamatia Scarvelis threw the shot put 16.11m (52-10.25) to notch another second place finish for the Vols. Freshman Tamia Crockett set a new PR and finished in sixth place with a throw of 14.43m (47-4.25).
Malik Elion claimed second place in the men's 200m dash as he finished the race in 21.84 to set a new personal best.
Adam Johnston notched a personal best in the mile as he finished in fourth place with a time of 4:19.19
In addition to the Vols' success on the track, Tennessee freshman Megan Murray finished in fifth place at the USATF Cross Country National Championship with a time of 23:17. Murray fought off snow and rain in Bend, Oregon to finish in fifth place and earn a spot on the United States team for the World Cross Country Championship and the NACAC Cross Country Championship. The NACAC Championship will be held in Boca Raton, Fla. on Mar. 4 while the World Championship will be in Kampala, Uganda on Mar. 26.
