KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee women's tennis team improved to 6-0 on the season Friday, shutting out Eastern Kentucky and Davidson in a doubleheader at Goodfriend Tennis Center.
"Overall, we did a great job today," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "We came out and played Eastern Kentucky earlier this morning, and I don't feel like we were 100 percent focused, which is something that I have talked about since I got here. We had to regroup after doubles, and they went out in singles completely focused. They did a fantastic job there. We had a break before Davidson, and I told the team that we had to be focused for them as well because they were going to compete hard."
In the first match of the day, the Vols rolled past EKU, 4-0. Eve Repic and Ashley Bongart both earned 6-0, 6-0 sweeps over their opponents in singles to help get the quick win over the Colonels.
Against Davidson, UT split the first two courts in doubles, coming down to Sadie Hammond and Gabby Schuck on Court 2. The match went back and forth, but the Volunteers pulled away at the end to clinch the doubles point with a 7-5 win over Anna Feaster and Ally Sexton.
UT's success continued in singles. Hammond extended her winning streak to six matches, clinching the first match on the day, 6-0, 6-3, and then giving Tennessee a 2-0 lead over Davidson with a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the second.
Repic sealed the win for the Vols with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Alexandra Abele for her second victory on the day. The two teams played out the remaining matches. Schuck, Brittany Lindl, Ariadna Riley and Kim Kermet all picked up their first wins of the day to help UT complete the doubleheader sweep.
Tennessee hits the road for the first time on Sunday, competing in a doubleheader against Furman and No. 11 Georgia Tech in Atlanta.
"On Sunday, we are looking to go out and compete against two really good teams," Ojeda said. "Furman and Georgia Tech are going to be two of the toughest teams we have seen yet. We could put Wake Forest into that category. Davidson for sure helped us get ready for those matches. I think it's going to be a physical match against Georgia Tech and Furman is going to be scrappy. We will have an unbelievable chance to see where we are at as a team. We just need to make sure that our team stays within itself."
