KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee men's tennis team closed non-conference play Saturday with a 6-1 loss to third-ranked Wake Forest before sweeping Lipscomb 7-0 at a renovated Barksdale Stadium.
The 34th-ranked Vols (8-4) open Southeastern Conference play next week with road matches against Kentucky and Vanderbilt.
Against Wake Forest, Luis Valero and Jack Schipanski toppled the top-ranked doubles team to help Tennessee open with a 1-0 lead, but the Vols could not keep up the momentum in singles in a 6-1 loss.
Valero and Schipanski earned their first top-10 win of the season and their 40th win together, defeating No. 1 Christian Seraphim and Skander Mansouri 6-3. The Vols won the doubles point when Timo Stodder and Scott Jones fought off two match points to beat Borna Gojo and Alan Gadjiev 7-6(5) on court 2.
In singles, Wake Forest won five of six first sets before earning four points to clinch the team victory. Stodder lost to No. 1-ranked Chrysochos 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 at the top of the lineup, his second match against a top-10 opponent this spring.
"I thought we did a great job in doubles," Tennessee head coach Sam Winterbotham said. "We got a win over the No. 1 team in the country, won a really tight match at 2 and competed hard at 3. I thought that was excellent. Going out in singles, give Wake Forest credit: they played well, and we were going to have to play really well to beat them. We were capable of doing that, but we allowed some matches to get away from us."
Against Lipscomb, the Vols won the doubles point and opened up singles play by winning five of six first sets. Jones was first off the court with a win, dropping just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Jorge Ortegon on court 3. Minutes later, Schipanski and freshman Luca Wiedenmann picked up quick straight-set victories to clinch the team victory at 4-0.
NEW-LOOK BARKSDALE STADIUM: Saturday marked the official start of the outdoor season for the Vols, plus the debut of Barksdale Stadium's resurfaced courts. The facility is undergoing its largest renovation in 30 years with the installation of a new lighting system plus improvements to the main pavilion and seating area.
