Coleman Wins 60M SEC Indoor Championship

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Sophomore Christian Coleman won the SEC Championship in the 60m and took second place in the 200m dash as the Vols wrapped up competition at the SEC Indoor Track & Field Championship. The Vols set 14 personal bests and posted 12 top-10 performances over two days of competition at the Vanderbilt Multipurpose Complex.
Coleman outpaced the field with a time of 6.52 seconds in the 60m, which broke his own facility record. The Atlanta native set the record of 6.54 in the Vols' first trip to Nashville this year for the Commodore Invitational in January. He then tied the mark in the prelims, yesterday. In the 200m dash, Coleman placed second with a time of 20.50. Jereem Richards of Alabama finished in 20.34 and won the race.
Stamatia Scarvelis set a school record in the weight throw with a toss of 21.49m (70-6.25). The sophomore finished in third place with while throwing the weight more than four feet past her previous career best. Scarvelis surpassed her personal best four times during the competition, but it was her second throw which passed Ariel Brooks' 2006 mark of 21.43m (70-3.75). The third place finish gave Scarvelis six points for the event and brought her personal total to 10 points for the SEC Championship after she took fifth place in the shot put on Friday.
The Tennessee men finished in 10th place with 23.5 points while the women finished in 12th place with 14.5 points. Arkansas won both team titles as they scored 98 points on the men's side and 106.5 on the women's side.
Shania Collins tied for sixth place in the 200m with a time of 23.51. That mark scored 2.5 for the women's team as she continued her strong showing in the 200m this weekend. The junior set a personal best in the prelims with a mark of 23.50
A day after qualifying in the mile and running the 3000m, Long ran a personal best in the mile finals to finish in seventh place. His mark of 4:06.17 earned the men's team two points.
The distance group of Brad Swiney (14:44.64), Wesley Robinson (14:49.31) and Nick Brey (14:55.70) all set personal bests in the 5000m race.
Both the men's and women's 4x400m relay teams scored as the women finished in seventh and the men took eighth place. The women's squad of Lenysse Dyer, Collins, Layla White and Maia McCoy finished crossed the line in 3:39.04 while the men's team of Ari Cogdell, Christian Coleman, Nathan Strother and Mustaqeem Williams finished in 3:09.57.
