KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Robert Hubbs III is the 48th Volunteer in the history of University of Tennessee basketball to score 1,000 points in his career. The senior guard came into the game against Vanderbilt shy of this achievement by just six points.
Hubbs reached this milestone when he was successful at the free-throw line, making his two shots with 8:22 remaining in Wednesday's 67-56 loss against Vanderbilt in Thompson-Boling Arena. These crucial shots brought the Volunteers within three points of the Commodores at 42-39, which was the closest since the start of the game.
One of Hubbs' most passionate and youngest fans was in attendance to see him achieve this.
Three-year-old Scarlett Hedrick, who met Hubbs after a game earlier this season, said, "He's my best friend and always says 'Hi' to me after the game."
Scarlett's mother, Grace, appreciates the kindness that Hubbs always displays to fans. "He has such humility even though he's such a great player," Grace said, "And after all these years, he doesn't overlook his fans, especially the little ones."
Hubbs finished as the leading scorer with 16 points, and was 6-of-6 at the charity line.
The last player to score 1,000 points was current Miami Heat guard Josh Richardson (1,252). Other recent players in Tennessee's 1,000-point club include: Jarnell Stokes (1,129), Jordan McRae (1,521), and Cameron Tatum (1,083).
