Tennessee Posts Seven Top-Five Finishes at Tiger Paw

CLEMSON, S.C. -- Tennessee posted seven personal bests and seven top-five finishes on day one of the Tiger Paw Invitational at the Clemson University Indoor Complex.
Nathan Strother posted a season-best time of 46.46 as he took fourth place in the 400m dash. That time would rank seventh in the NCAA coming into the weekend. Ari Cogdell finished in eighth as he raced to the finish line in 47.14.
Shania Collins took second place in the 60m dash as she posted a time of 7.38 in both the prelims and the finals. Maia McCoy finished in eighth with a time of 7.52 while DeAndra Greer just missed making the finals, but finished with a personal best mark of 7.49 in the prelims.
Stamatia Scarvelis claimed second place in the women's weight throw as her best throw came on her fifth attempt. The sophomore tossed the 20-pound weight 19.84m (65-1.25). Candice Butler continued her good form with a fourth place showing on a throw of 19.15m (62-10).
Seth Whitener continued his improvement in the weight throw as he set a new personal record of 20.32m (66-8). Whitener has set a new PR for the third consecutive meet and for the fifth time in six meets this year. Whitener finished sixth in Friday's competition while Matthew Zajac took eighth. Zajac tossed the weight 19.22m (63-0.75).
Mustaqeem Williams set a new personal best in the long jump as he finished in fourth place with a mark of 7.39m (24-3). Williams also qualified for the 60m dash finals with a time of 6.80 in the prelims, but did not participate in the final. Malik Elion finished 15th in the prelims with a time of 6.89.
Coming off winning the SEC Freshman of the Week, Domonique Turner posted a time of 8.37 in the prelims and the finals of the 60m hurdles. Turner finished sixth overall against a competitive field.
Freshman Tristan Slater tied his career-best mark with a pole vault clearance of 5.10m (16-8.75). Slater cleared that mark on his first attempt and ended the competition in a tie for third.
Running in the second heat of the women's mile, Jessica Rizor finished in second place with a mark of 5:07.89. Her sister, Julia Rizor, finished fourth in the heat with a time of 5:10.31 while Peighton Meske took sixth with a mark of 5:18.09. Those times ranked 14th, 17th and 20th overall.
Adam Johnston sprinted down the home stretch to move from sixth to third in his mile heat. In the process, the freshman set a new personal record with a time of 4:19.08 and finished 12th overall.
Freshman Brooklynn Broadwater won her 400m heat as she led from start to finish and crossed the line in 55.45 for the 12th best time of the day. Layla White posted a time of 55.72 to take 14th overall and second in her heat.
In her first competitive race since the USA Olympic Trials in July, Chelsea Blaase finished third in the 5000m competition at the Husky Classic. Taking on an extremely talented field at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle, Blaase crossed the line in 15:53.73 to claim the sixth fastest time in the country this year.
Tennessee will return to action on Saturday with action slated to begin at 11 a.m. at the Tiger Paw Invitational. Zach Long will race at 5 p.m. PT at the Husky Classic on Saturday.
