Â
Auburn (14-8, 7-6 SEC) opened the first set on a 5-1 run before the Lady Vols got things going their way, which proved to not take too long as Tennessee tied the match up at 5-all in what would be the first of 11 ties in the set.
Â
The Lady Vols took their first lead following a kill by Erica Treiber, which gave the Big Orange an 11-10 lead they held until the War Eagles tied the match up at 16-all later in the match. The two teams traded points until the Tigers took an 18-17 lead on an attack error by Breana Jeter.
Â
Auburn held on to win the opening set 25-22.
Â
The second set saw 14 ties as the two evenly-matched teams battled it out, but Tennessee would come out on top 25-23. Madison Coulter led the way with four kills in the second set. Neither team led by more than three points, which the Lady Vols did on two different occasions. The first one came with the score 9-6 following a service ace by Keyton Kinley and the second with the score 23-20 following an attack error by Gwyn Jones.
Â
Grubbs had four kills and Treiber and Coulter each had three but it was not enough, as Auburn took the third set 25-18. The Tigers closed the set on an 11-3 run to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Â
The fourth and final set was as tightly-contested as the first three. Jeter had four kills and had a .667 hitting percentage for the Lady Vols, but Auburn would come out on top 25-20 to take the set and the match 3-1.
Â
Coulter and Jeter each had nine kills for Tennessee. Treiber added eight of her own in the effort.
Â
Auburn had three players finish with 10 or more kills, led by Brenna McIlory, who finished with match-high 20 kills. Shaina White and Jones also finished with double-digit kills of 17 and 11, respectively.
Â
Tennessee will remain on the road and face Alabama on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Foster Auditorium.Â
