KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Erica Treiber and Tessa Grubbs each finished the match with double-digit kills in a tough 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 25-21) home loss to the Gamecocks of South Carolina Friday night at Thompson-Boling Arena.
Treiber had 11 kills and a .375 hitting percentage, while Grubbs finished with 10 kills and a .385 hitting percentage for Tennessee (11-10, 4-8 SEC). Sophomore setter Sedona Hansen recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 23 assists and 13 digs for the Lady Vols.
South Carolina (11-12, 4-7 SEC) used a 6-0 run to take a 10-9 lead over the Lady Vols, which prompted a Tennessee timeout. Following the timeout, Breana Jeter came off the bench and tied the set back up at 10-all with a kill.
The Gamecocks would not go away, as the two teams tied the match up seven times to go along with five lead changes in the opening set. Mikayla Shields recorded a kill to make the score 21-20 and give the Gamecocks their final lead on their way to a 25-22 set win.
The Lady Vols bounced back in the second, hitting .382 as a team -- led by Grubbs and Kendra Turner, who had two kills each. The set was one of the tighter sets, as there were 15 ties between the two teams. Tennessee would get a kill from Jeter late in the set and take a 23-22 lead en route to a 25-23 set win.
South Carolina controlled the third set from the start, going on a 7-1 run and never relinquishing the lead. UT would get as close as three with the score 9-6, but the Gamecocks would not give and would win the set 25-18.
In what looked similar to the third set, the Gamecocks came out fast but it would not be long before Treiber and the Lady Vols got things going. Tennessee used a 3-0 spurt in the middle of the set to cut South Carolina's lead to just one at 18-17. The two teams traded blows from that point forward, but South Carolina held on for the set win, 25-21.
South Carolina had a .321 hitting percentage and four players finished the match with double-digit kills. Shields led the match with 23 kills, while also hitting .419 and adding 19 digs for the double-double.
The Lady Vols will be back in action on Sunday, when they welcome the No. 4 Florida Gators to Thompson-Boling Arena at 1:30 p.m.
