Lady Vols Card Top-Three Finish to Wrap Up Fall
October 31, 2017 | Women's Golf
DALLAS, Texas -- Led by freshman Waverly Whiston's third-place performance, Tennessee defeated six ranked opponents en route to a third-place finish at the Trinity Forest Invitational on Tuesday.
"We had a good finish and this time beat some teams that were ranked ahead of us which was a nice way to end the fall," head coach Judi Pavon said. "We didn't play well today so we weren't able to challenge the leaders which was our goal for the day."
During the cold and windy final round, the Lady Vols fired 316 to wrap up fall play. Tennessee's final score of 910 (302-292-316) put the team 15 strokes behind second-place Houston. Kansas State took home the team title with an 893 (+29) total. Kansas State's Reid Isaac captured the individual crown by two strokes, shooting a one-under 215 on the par 72, 6,372-yard course.
Whiston tied for 10th place with an eight-over 224. She posted a tournament-low and career-low score of 67 in the second round of the invitational to card her second top-10 finish since donning the orange and white.
"I learned a lot this week about my game," Whiston said. "It was nice to get a good finish out of it, but I know I can definitely improve and get ready for the spring season."
Micheala Williams, a sophomore, turned in a solid performance for Tennessee. She counted in the first and third rounds and recorded 76 on the final day to total 226 (+10). She finished tied for 16th place. Senior Blakesly Warren tied for 21st place with a 54-hole score 229 (+13).
Both Ariana Macioce and Anna Newell concluded the tournament with final rounds of 82 to tie for 34th place (232, +16) and 45th place (236, +20), respectively.
Tennessee native Mariah Smith competed as an individual for the Lady Vols. She shot 81 on the final day of competition to finish tied for 41st place (235, +19).
"For the off-season we will really figure out where each player needs to improve to make us more competitive for the spring. We will also get some much needed rest and focus on academics," Pavon added.
