Lady Vols Finish Day 1 of Fall Invite

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee women's tennis team enjoyed a solid start to the Tennessee Fall Invite at Goodfriend Tennis Center on Friday.
The Lady Vols started the day off with a round of doubles versus Wake Forest and ended with a round of singles against Arizona State. Two extra singles matches were played as the Sun Devils only have four players competing over the weekend.
In doubles, Sadie Hammond and Gabby Schuck faced an early deficit but rallied to defeat Chandler Carter and MC Meredith, 8-6. Ariadna Riley and Chelsea Sawyer went back-and-forth with the duo of Emma Davis and Courtney Meredith before pulling out an 8-7 (5) win.
Making her first appearance for the Lady Vols, Elizabeth Profit paired up with Tenika McGiffin on Court 2. After UT held an early lead, Wake Forest's Eliza Omirou and Joanna Zalewski fought back to win in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (5).
In singles, Hammond used back-to-back aces to cap off a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Arizona State's Savannah Slaysman. Riley also picked up a win in singles, defeating Nicole Fossa Huergo, 7-5, 6-2.
In the extra matches, Tenika McGiffin rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Courtney Meredith of Wake Forest, and Chelsea Sawyer earned a hard-fought victory against Ohio State's Andrea Ballinger, 7-6 (8), 4-6, 6-4.
The Lady Vols will be back in action starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, beginning with a round of singles against Ohio State followed by a round of doubles versus Arizona State at 1 p.m.
