The Orange Team came away victorious in a back-and-forth Game 3 to win the Orange and White World Series on Friday night at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
A four-run sixth inning proved to be the difference in the game. The Orange team hit a pair of home runs in the inning, including a three-run bomb by Pete Derkay that proved to be the game winner.
The White Team struck early to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with back-to-back doubles from Jay Charleston and Brodie Leftridge to start the frame.
White Team starting pitcher Andrew Schultz cruised through the first three innings without allowing a base runner, but ran into some trouble in the top of the fourth.
Schultz walked Brandon Chinea to lead off the inning before allowing a double to Andre Lipcius that tied the game at one. A wild pitch allowed another run to score while a pair of walks to Benito Santiago and Pete Derkay prompted a pitching change as Richard Jackson entered in relief. Schultz finished the day with 3 1/3 innings pitched, allowing two runs on one hit and three walks. He also recorded three strikeouts.
Orange Team starter Garrett Crochet was able to shake off a tough start with two scoreless innings before getting into some more trouble in the fourth. A walk and a single put runners on the corners before a passed ball allowed the tying run to score. Darling came on in relief of Crochet with two outs, but gave up an RBI single to freshman Evan Gilliam before getting out of the inning.
The Orange Team quickly erased its deficit with a four-run outburst in the sixth inning that included a pair of homers. Santiago and Wyatt Stapp led off the inning with a single and a double before Derkay cleared the bases with his three-run shot into the bullpen in right field. Three batters later, freshman Morgan Copeland launched a solo home run into the parking lot behind the left-field wall to make it 6-3.
Redshirt sophomore Nico Mascia continued his solid play with a sac fly in the bottom of the eighth to cut the White Team's deficit to two heading into the ninth inning. Mascia finished the night with a single and an RBI.
However, the Orange Team's bullpen negated any chance for a White Team comeback, allowing just three hits and one run in 5 1/3 innings of work. Will Heflin picked up the save after striking out the only batter he faced.
