Lady Vols Move on to Quarterfinals
October 13, 2017 | Women's Tennis
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- The Tennessee women's tennis team continued to find success in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships at the Adams Tennis Complex on Friday.
"Our team had another good day," said head coach Alison Ojeda. "We are getting close to taking that next step to being a team who just gets it. That is exciting, not just for me as a coach but also for our players. They can sense that they are about to do something great. It's an exciting time to be a Tennessee Vol."
The Lady Vols played in two rounds of singles to begin the day, with Sadie Hammond advancing to the round of 16 on Saturday. The day ended with a round of doubles, and UT had two duos move on to the quarterfinals.
Hammond downed Evansville's Diana Tkachenko, 6-3, 6-0, and Cincinnati's Ioana Guna, 7-5, 6-0, to move on in the draw. She will face Kentucky's Mami Adachi on Saturday for a shot in the quarterfinals.
In the round of 64, Gabby Schuck defeated Lauren Gish from Vanderbilt, 6-2, 7-6 (9), and Johanna Silva beat Karoline Haller of Wright State, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, to advance to the round of 16. Both players fell in the next round to end their run.
"I'm really proud of Sadie and Gabby," Ojeda said. "Sadie took care of business and got so much better today. She was a leader. Gabby is on her way to having the best year she's ever had."
In doubles, Hammond and Schuck cruised past Cincinnati's Guna and Morton, 8-4, and Ariadna Riley and Chelsea Sawyer downed Markesini/Pereira from ETSU, 8-4, as both duos advanced to stay alive in the doubles draw.
Sawyer picked up her first win of the tournament in singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Mariella Pessina from IUPUI in the consolation draw.
