Lady Vols Start Strong in Regionals
October 12, 2017 | Women's Tennis
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- The Tennessee women's tennis team started out strong in the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships at the Adams Tennis Complex, going 5-0 in doubles and 3-1 in singles.
"I'm really proud of our girls," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "We've spent the last two weeks talking about energy, communication, footwork and errors. Our team did a great job managing all four today, and it showed."
The Lady Vols played in two rounds of doubles, advancing all three duos to the round of 16. The teams of Tenika McGiffin and Johanna Silva as well as Ariadna Riley and Chelsea Sawyer both went 2-0 on the day.
After earning a first-round bye, the fifth-seeded team of Sadie Hammond and Gabby Schuck downed the duo of Lysova and Kalita from Miami (OH), 8-3, to move on.
In singles, Schuck defeated Audrey Berger of Ball State, 6-1, 6-7 (0), 6-0. After splitting the first two sets, Silva rallied past Cincinnati's Antonella Bramato, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. With McGiffin picking up a 7-6 (0), 6-4 win over Caroline Morton, five Lady Vols earned their spot in the second round of the singles draw.
Play begins at 10:30 a.m. ET tomorrow with two rounds of singles first followed by a round of doubles to end the day.
