KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The Tennessee Volunteers volleyball team returns to the road this weekend with the Holiday Inn West Invitational on Western Michigan’s campus.
The Vols (5-1) start the two-day tournament Friday against host Western Michigan (2-5) at 10 a.m. Eastern, followed by Milwaukee (5-1) at 5 p.m. On Saturday, the Vols face Xavier (3-4) at noon.
For notes on the weekend:
WELCOME TO MICHIGAN
- The Vols are playing their third of four non-conference tournaments this week with the Holiday Inn Invitational, hosted by Western Michigan.
- In terms of all-time series records: Tennessee leads Western Michigan 3-2 and Xavier 3-0. Friday will mark the first-ever meeting with Milwaukee.
- Erica Treiber, a native of Unionville, Mich., is playing a college match in her home state for the first time.
- The Vols enter the weekend ranked in the top three in the SEC in four categories: aces (1st, 1.91), opponent hit% (2nd, .146), blocks (2nd, 2.78) and digs (3rd, 14.91).
REWIND: OHIO WEEKEND
- The Vols hit the road for the first time last weekend, going 2-1.
- They beat Eastern Michigan and lost in five sets to Cleveland State at CSU. The next day, they scored their first road win, beating Kent State 3-1.
- Seniors Bridgette Villano and Raina Hembry were named to the CSU Invitational all-tournament team.
- Freshman Tessa Grubbs recorded 23 kills against Cleveland State, the most kills by a Vol since Kendra Turner had 23 in November 2014.
- Freshman Sedona Hansen had double-doubles in all three matches, including 53 assists and 17 digs vs. EMU.
DIG 999
- Senior Bridgette Villano enters this weekend just one dig away from becoming the 14th player in program history to reach 1,000 in her career.
- In five matches she has played this season, she has averaged 4.20 digs per set, good for 84 total.
- She finished with 27 digs in the five-set loss to Cleveland State last weekend, just one away from her career best.
- Last weekend, she recorded at least 15 digs in all three matches (18 vs. Eastern Michigan, 27 vs. Cleveland State, 18 vs. Kent State).
- As a junior, she averaged a career best 4.52 digs/set (425 total)

- AGAINST WESTERN MICHIGAN: Series: Tennessee leads 3-2 … Current Streak: UT won 2 … Last Match: Tennessee won 3-1 in 2004. Prior to that, the two teams had not faced since 1990.
