Volleyball Downs Eastern Michigan, 3-1

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Led by a season-high 17 kills from senior Bri Holmes and 16 from freshman Alyssa Andreno, the Tennessee Volunteers volleyball team defeated Eastern Michigan 3-1 (25-20, 25-22, 19-25, 30-28) at Cleveland State's Woodling Gymnasium.
Eastern Michigan (2-2) improved its play over the final two sets, but the Vols (4-0) rallied to end the match in the fourth set.
Tennessee fought off two set points before capitalizing on its third match point as sophomore middle hitter Erica Treiber fired an ace to seal the set and victory at 30-28.
Tennessee plays Cleveland State (3-1) tonight at 7 p.m.
While Holmes and Andreno led the Vols in kills, freshman setter Sedona Hansen collected a double-double with 53 sets and 17 digs. Senior libero Bridgette Villano had a season-high 18 digs.
In the first set, Tennessee led from the third point -- a kill by Hembry -- onward. The Vols led by as many as eight points in the set with Hembry and Andreno closing out the frame 25-20 with a block. Hembry led with five kills in the set, hitting .500.
The Vols rolled out to a 3-0 lead in the second set and never trailed, eventually building a 20-14 lead on a kill by Kendra Turner. Eastern Michigan rallied to eventually cut the lead to two points at 23-21, but the Vols won two of the final three points. Andreno and Erica Treiber teamed up for a block on set point to win the second, 25-22.
Eastern Michigan dramatically upped its hitting percentage to .353 in the third set, recording 16 kills to four errors. EMU's Alyssa LaFace broke a 17-17 tie with an ace, and the Eagles led the rest of the way, winning the final four points to take the set 25-19.
Fourth-set play went back and forth with Eastern Michigan leading by as many as three points at 21-18. Tennessee won five of the next seven points to tie the match at 23-23 on a kill by Holmes. From there, Eastern Michigan had two set points and the Vols had three before Treiber ended the match with an ace.
NOTES
- Tennessee unveiled its fourth starting lineup in as many matches: Raina Hembry, Erica Treiber, Sedona Hansen, Bri Holmes, Kendra Turner, Alyssa Andreno and Bridgette Villano as libero. Holmes and Hembry have started the first four matches.
- Villano finished with double-digit digs for the third time this season, ending with a season-high 18.
- Hansen had her second double-double of the season, finishing with a career-high 53 assists and 18 digs.
- Three Vols had at least 10 kills: Holmes (17), Andreno (16), Treiber (10).
- Three Vols had at least 10 digs: Villano (18), Hansen (17), Schumacher (10).
