Vols Run Past JMU, 3-0

WASHINGTON, D.C.-- The Tennessee volleyball team strung together surges of answered points every set in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-13) victory over James Madison to start Saturday's GW Invitational action at Charles E. Smith Center.
Freshman Tessa Grubbs had 13 kills while hitting .450 to lead the Vols, while senior Bri Holmes added 12 kills and five digs. Freshman Sedona Hansen compiled her fifth double-double of the season with 40 assists and 10 digs.
The Vols (8-3) play host George Washington at 7:30 p.m. to conclude the final non-conference tournament before SEC play.
Down 17-13, the Vols closed out the first set by winning 12 of the final 13 points, including nine points in a row to go ahead 22-17 behind Brooke Schumacher's serving. Britney Vallez closed out the set with back-to-back aces.
Set two was also defined by a long run midway through by the Vols. James Madison took a 12-6 lead, but the Vols won six of the next seven points to close the lead to 13-12 on a block by Alyssa Andreno and Erica Treiber.
James Madison again took a three-point lead but the Vols responded by winning 11 of the next 13 points, going ahead 23-17 on a JMU attack error. The Vols eventually closed out the set on a Bri Holmes kill.
In the third set, the Vols strung together seven of eight points to go ahead 13-8 on a JMU attack error. They won seven of eight points ahead to take a 22-12 lead. Kendra Turner finished the match with a kill. The Vols improved from the previous two sets, hitting .600 as a team.
NOTES
- Tennessee starters: Sedona Hansen, Erica Treiber, Britney Vallez, Alyssa Andreno, Raina Hembry, Bri Holmes and Bridgette Villano as libero. It is the fourth time in five matches the lineup has been used.
- The Vols hit.388 for the match, including an even .600 in the third set. It marks the fifth time this season that the Vols have hit above .300 as a team.
- Four players with at least 10 attacks hit above .300 (Erica Treiber, .636; Alyssa Andreno, .455; Tessa Grubbs, .450; Raina Hembry, .353).
- The Vols are 8-0 when recording a higher attack percentage than the opponent.
- Bridgette Villano led Tennessee with 13 digs; Treiber and Hembry had two blocks each.
