The Vols posted 280 team points to take eighth out of the 23 teams that competed on Saturday morning. Sophomore Zach Long finished the 8K in 25:34.80 finishing in 32nd place overall. Sophomore Wesley Robinson crossed the line shortly after, recording a time of 25:44.5 to finish in 42nd. Tennessee freshman Gashaw Duhamel ran his first official race in 26:12.50, placing 74th. Sophomore Dartanian Oakley finished directly behind Duhamel in 75th, posting a time of 26:13.60. Junior Andre Hillsman rounded out the Vols scorers in 80th (26:15.70).
"We were pleased with the end result; finishing in the top 10 and competing well. Zach (Long) and Wes (Robinson) finished first and second for the second consecutive race. Our 3-4-5 runners ran in a tight pack. It was a good race debut for Gashaw (Duhamel). Dartanian Oakley was much improved from two weeks ago and (Andre) Hillsman rounded out that group well," said Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Beth Alford-Sullivan.
A lightning delay caused both races to be put on hold. The men started an hour later than scheduled and the women's competition was delayed for nearly two hours. Tennessee women's squad did not run because of the weather.
"We made an educated call based on the weather," Alford-Sullivan said. "It started coming down pretty heavily during the men's race, and it wasn't conducive to racing so we made the call to hold off on racing the women. We will add another competition later in the season."
The Volunteers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Ky. UT fans can follow cross country on Twitter and Instagram @Vol_Track.
