Tennessee is coming off a tough 1-0 loss to Washington on Thursday night. The Vols outshot the Huskies 14-9 and had numerous chances to tie the game in the second half, but were unable to find the equalizer.
Despite the loss, UT had three players return from injury, headlined by forward Hannah Wilkinson, who led the team with three shots on goal in the match. The majority of the Vols’ chances came off of corner kicks, as the Vols had 12 in the game compared to just four from UW.
Vols’ Success vs. In-State Foes
Tennessee is 25-12-5 all-time against teams from the Volunteer state, including a perfect 4-0 against ETSU. The Vols are even more dominant at home, posting a 15-5-2 record against in-state opponents in Knoxville.
UT Getting Healthy
The Vols received a boost with the return of three key players from injury this week. Wilkinson, Carlyn Baldwin and Mackenzie Gouner all made their season debuts in Thursday’s loss to the Huskies. Wilkinson, UT’s active leader in goals (22) and points (53), led the team with three shots on goal while playing 69 minutes. Gouner played 67 minutes on the back line and nearly tied the game in the second half, but had her header cleared off the goal line by a defender. Baldwin started in the midfield and played 76 minutes.
Stingy Defensive Effort Continues
The Big Orange have picked up where they left off defensively from 2015. After ranking second in the SEC in goals allowed (18), GAA (0.93) and shutouts (nine) last year, the Vols have allowed just two goals in three games so far this season. UT has outshot its opponents 49-33 this year and is averaging over 16 shots per contest.
Vols Tabbed Ninth in SEC Preseason Poll
UT was picked to finish ninth in the SEC this season by the league’s 14 head coaches in the preseason poll. Defending regular-season and tournament champion, Florida, was picked to win the league. View the entire preseason poll HERE.
