KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Junior Teleri Hughes has been selected by the Golf Union of Wales (GUW) to represent Wales as a member of the Welsh National Team in the European Ladies' Team Championship at Oddur Golf Club in Urridavollur, Iceland on July 5-9. Hughes is one of seven players selected to represent the country.
"I am excited to play in the European Ladies' Championship where I get to play against some of the best amateur players in Europe," Hughes said. "It will be a great experience and I love that I get to represent both Tennessee and Wales."
The European Ladies' Team Championship is contested by 20 teams who are nominated by the European Golf Association (EGA) Member National Golf Authorities. Comprised of two stages, the Championship features two rounds of 18 holes of stroke play which decides the match play order for the final three days of the tournament.
Members of the Welsh National Team were selected based on performances in pre-identified key events, current WAGR and relative movements within a six month period, GUW Order of Merit and playing statistics and attitude and willingness to be a team player.
"My dad was born in Wales, which makes me eligible to play in tournaments such as the Welsh Ladies' Championship where I won the stroke play portion of the tournament this May in Cardiff, Wales," Hughes added.
Hughes' stroke-play win at the Welsh Ladies' Amateur Championship added 50 points to her total in the Welsh Order of Merit rankings, moving her into a tie for 16th place.
During the 2015-16 season, Hughes played in four tournaments, posting a career-low 78.40 average. Additionally, she carded two top-25 finishes, including a top-10 placement at the Lady Bulldog Individual.
The Knoxville-native posted one top-10 finish in 2014 as a sophomore and competed in three tournaments during her first year on Rocky Top (2013-14).
In May, Hughes was named to the SEC Community Service Team for her work with local organizations, UT golf clinics and the MBA Grads to Golf Program.
