TEMPE, Ariz. -- The postseason accolades continue to pile up for freshman Sadie Hammond, who was named the 2016 ITA Ohio Valley Regional Rookie of the Year Monday.
Hammond has already been named second-team All-SEC, made the SEC All-Freshman team and qualified to compete in the 2016 NCAA Singles Championships. She is the first person to receive the award since junior Eve Repic won it in 2014.
“I'm so grateful and humbled to have received so many awards and recognitions this season,” Hammond said. “It's rewarding to have my hard work acknowledged and valued by the conferences and committees. Being recognized makes me even more motivated to reach for bigger things and achieve my goals.”
Hammond wasn’t the only Volunteer to be honored by the ITA Monday. Melissa Schaub, a former All-American for UT, was named the Midwest Regional Coach of the Year as the head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Schuab, who is in her fourth season at OSU, was also named Big Ten Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year earlier this month. She led the Buckeyes to their first Big Ten Tournament title this season.
Schaub played for Tennessee from 2002-05, notably winning 81 doubles matches during that time. She was a top-four seed in the NCAA doubles championships with Vilmarie Castellvi in 2003 and earned All-America and All-SEC honors that season.
Both honorees are automatically eligible to be the national award winners, which will be announced on Tuesday, May 24.
